CroakerFest Themes for 2003
We await the decision of the judges

March 27, 2003

Okay, y'all... the search for a Croakerfest theme is wrapping up.

Organizers of the July 5th Croakerfest are now poring over the entries. The mission has been to come up with a creative yet short theme - short so it can fit on a T-shirt.

Here are the most recent entries that came over the transom:

Swim fast, croak loud!

Croaking on my mind!

Those were from John and Barry Hofman who also clearly had North Carolina's hog farms on their minds:

Croaker, the other white meat.

---
Brian McLamb of Roseboro, NC had a few suggestions too...

Feeling Festive? Let's Croaker!

Charming, Colorful, Community - Croaker Fest!

------------------------
Jacksie Pitts wrote to say she thought there might be "a patriotic thread ....woven somewhere in the festival's fabric of fun and celebration. Who knows what will have transpired in the world by July?!

I'd like to celebrate the idea that we are fortunate to be able to have such uplifting fun times in Oriental with some poetic license...."and crown the good with brotherhood."

--------------

Beverly Schwartz of Oriental approaches the task with a self-deprecating tone:

"I guess it's high time I added my two cents worth (read em, that's about all they are worth!)"

Croakerfest...
Fish tales told here, some true!

Croakerfest, Oriental style...
Life on the croakin' water!

Croakerfest...
One small fish for man,
One giant festival for mankind!

(Y'know Beverly, we can almost hear Neil Armstrong saying that, too... )
-------------

Kathy Kellum has perhaps more experience with croakers than most of us. She writes:

"I'm now obsessed with thinking about Croaker slogans. Having worked at the Breading Table at the Hampstead, NC Croaker Festival last fall, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the topic."

Croakers Do It Underwater

Love Those Croakers

Don't Croak, Be Happy

A Croaker a Day....

Live Today, Croak Tomorrow

(A new spin on "enjoy yourself, it's later than you think")
---------------

Keeping in mind that our esteemed fish takes his name from the croaking sound he makes, Diane Stewart suggests:

Music to our ears

Diane adds that there could be "singing croakers on the shirt or musical notes coming from the 'sound'. The floats and activities would have an easy time playing with this theme."
----------

No jokes, the fish croaks!

CroakerFest, above the rest!

Declare Independence! Eat Croaker!

Croakers speak! Oriental listens! Partytime!

CroakerFestivus! for the Restivus!

Cheryl Huff of Rambunctious Farm chides us for the call for brevity, but she comes up with some wit from the bookshelves... "in honor of some famous fish stories"

Herman Melville: Call me Croaker.
Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Croaker (or The Croaker Always Rises)
Norman Maclean: A River Runs Croaker (or A Croaker Runs Through It)
Peter Benchley: Gills! (Dum,Dum...Dum,Dum)

Or, as the souvenir tee shirts describe most fun stuff: Croaker is Life

Meanwhile, over at Sea Harbour, Landon Winstead provided some Dylanesque suggestions.

The Answer is Blowin' In The Wind

Blowin' In The Wind

Judi Heit took her cue from the other names for the Croaker. And underscored why we prefer the name we've given the fish...

"The Atlantic Croaker is also known by its common name, hardhead (also King Billy, grumbler) Thus my entry for this year's Croakerfest Theme:

Croakerfest 2003

Ain't No Grumblers Here

Eric Carlson who says he is from "Va Beach - now, Neuse Winds - 2006" suggested:
