Driving home from New Bern with something big is a familiar thing to most Oriental residents. Shoppers in Oriental can find most any boat thingy, hardware doodad, a bottle of wine… even a shirt & hat. But when we need something large, ya know… a refrigerator, or say…. a mattress… we might have to go to “the city”.
And so it was on a recent day. Andy Polo decided he and the Mrs. needed a new mattress. Andy researched the subject, and then proceeded to New Bern to acquire new restful comfort for his fine household.
The selection was made. Top of the line, padded, plush. A beautiful mattress. Andy had borrowed a trailer, and you wouldn’t believe his good fortune. The mattress fit perfectly, snugly in the open trailer. In fact it was so snug, seemingly so secure, that Andy decided it didn’t need to be tied down. Andy proceeded back, with coming blissful sleep secure in his mind.
Now this was a windy day. As Andy came across the New Bern bridge he felt a shudder, and noticed that multiple motorists in the opposite lane were aggressively pointing in the air. What happened? Andy got to the other side – the mattress was nowhere to be seen.
Over the bridge it had gone, missing all the cars and gliding down to the Neuse. While that mattress was never discovered (a great mattress may be floating by a Neuse shore) – Andy did complete his mission. He went back and got another (Andy even talked them into a discount for mattress #2). This time he tied it down.Somewhere out there – there might be a shrimp trawler… with a really nice mattress.
A salute to Andy – he isn’t afraid to share stories from life when things don’t go perfectly.
