Coming Events in Oriental and in and near Pamlico County

  • One of the more striking and memorable scenes at the Spirit of Christmas is that of luminaria lining – and lighting – Oriental’s main streets as the festivities kick off on Friday night, which this year falls on December 8. Those luminaries are not bought off the shelf. Rather, the pieces – white paper bag, candle, a weight to keep it stable – are assembled by volunteers in the days leading up to the Spirit of Christmas. You can be part of this spirited behind-the-scenes production. The schedule is:

Tuesday December 5 starting at 4:30p – Bag Folding at the Toucan Grill (holiday music, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, cash bar)

Thursday December 7 starting at 3:30p – Candle Lighting and Bag Stuffing at the Station 19 Fire Station on Straight Rd. (Candles are momentarily lit to make it easier to light them curbside on Friday.)

Friday December 8 at 3:30p – Loading the now-ready-for-prime-time luminarias on to trailers at the Fire Station so they can be placed along the streets.

Marsha Paplham orchestrates this production of glow. Right now, she says “we are looking for volunteers with trailers to help distribute the candles.” If you can volunteer your truck-and-trailer for a couple of hours that Friday, Marsha asks that you call her at 249-0334 or 675-5142.
