Many people say that as they age, they want to remain in their own homes as long as they can. With that – and the large population of retirees in Oriental and nearby towns — in mind , some Pamlico residents spent the winter and spring brainstorming how to better help area seniors “Age in Place.”

This steering committee found that a few hundred communities across the country have been setting up non-profit, grass-roots “Villages” where volunteers can provide basic services – something it would like to set up with several Pamlico County communities along the Neuse.

One early step in that direction is first hearing what area residents say they’d want a “Village” to do. (Also, what they’d be willing to pay for it.) The public is invited to attend a meeting to give input and to learn more about Aging in Place and the Village concept. First meeting was on Tuesday July 11 (at 1p or 7p) at Oriental Town Hall. They’ll do it again on Wednesday, August 2 at 4p at Minnesott Golf and Country Club. For more info, click here.
