CAMA Comment Period Trawler Slips - Nov 25

Chris Fulcher is seeking a CAMA major permit to construct 6 slips for trawlers on Oriental’s harbor to “provide additional docking facilities for the growing fishing fleet of Fulcher Point, LLC” The slips would be between TownDock #2 and Fulcher’s roofless building and adjacent to what had been public access right-of-way until the Town’s 2012 land swap with the fishing businessman. The CAMA application (downloadable here) also calls for dredging to 13 feet, and bulkheading the shore. Schematics of project, here.

The project comes on the heels of Fulcher’s now-shelved plans for a trawler painting operation with 300 ton TravLift. No TravLift in the current proposal; it requests that the proposed dock platform(s)” be permitted to “exceed the allowable width of 6 feet” in order to support “small tracked or rubber tired equipment” used to lift parts on to and off of trawlers in order to make repairs or stock.

As part of the CAMA process, public comment is to be considered if received before Saturday, November 25th or up until a decision is made. (CAMA also seeks comment from adjacent land owners; in this instance, the only adjacent property owner (by land) was the town of Oriental which did not oppose a permit.) Comments should be addressed to Braxton C, Davis, Director of Coastal Management,400 Commerce Ave, Morehead City, NC 28557. (click for Legal Notice that appeared in Pamlico News on Nov 1.)
