Coming Events in Oriental and in and near Pamlico County

  • One New Year dragon run is just not enough. Sure, the dragon danced down Hodges Street on December 31, but that dragon comes back out for the Chinese New Year. This year, that’ll be on Monday, January 23 and the dragon will be dancing on Hodges Street at 4p. (Oriental held its first Asian Lunar New Year — aka Chinese New Year — celebration last year, which you can see by clicking here.) Charlie Overcash and Wendy Osserman say there will be a rehearsal on Monday, January 23 at 3p at 402 Hodges Street. If you’re interested in helping with the dragon in the future, this is a good opportunity to learn what goes in to making it dance. Any questions contact Wendy at 252-249-0422 or wodanceco @ aol.com.

Meanwhile, at the time of the dragon run, the Oriental History Museum will be showing off its Dragon Quilt and will sell raffle tickets on the porch of The Bean. (The drawing is in the summer; photo at left shows a portion of the quilt.) It’s a fundraiser for the museum. And there are drawings for dragon-obilia at the Provision Company and Nautical Wheelers.
