Coming Events in Oriental and in and near Pamlico County

  • When Andrea Bruce worked as a photojournalist in Iraq and Afghanistan, she tried, with her images, to drive home how the everyday lives of people there were changed by the wars going on around them. Andrea is once again looking for photos on a personal level – this time for a book and eventual exhibition about what citizenship, community and democracy mean to people in the US. Andrea kicked off “Our Democracy” just last month and did so here in Pamlico County, where she grew up.

“Our Democracy” will include her photos and those submitted by the public in the US counties she visits over the next 2 years. She is also wanting to hear people’s views on democracy – how it exists, how it can disappear, where it needs help. As Andrea puts it, “a couple words or a sentence or even a paragraph on what democracy, citizenship, equality, or community means to them. What are the things in the county that need help, and what are its strengths. Anything is good.” Send your words – and recently taken photos that speak to them – to 4scoremore@gmail.com Photos should have been taken no more than a month or so ago. Deadline for submitting photos here in Pamlico County’ is in February. As a work in progress, Andrea is curating the photos on an Instagram feed at @ourdemocracy (Click on photo here for some of the shots already sent in.)

For more background, see Andrea’s description of the project in this piece she wrote as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard.
