The Pamlico Birders go a little further afield on Thursday August 16 with a trip to Hammocks Beach State Park, an island facing the Atlantic near Swansboro. “The neat thing about ocean birding,” says Liz Lathrop, “is that one can stand in one place and let the birds come to you.” The birders don’t usually gather in the summer months, but Liz Lathrop says it’s a chance for the group to get together and welcome newcomer birders, and just take a walk on the beach. They’ll be gathering at 7:30a at the OUMC parking lot on Church St. Cost of getting on the island, via the pedestrian ferry, is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and kids 6-12. Plans are to be there til mid-afternoon. Bring a bagged lunch and something to share along with your binocs. Let Liz know you’ll be coming and if you would like to drive.
