At 8a on Friday August 10, Oriental’s Town Board holds a public hearing on whether the Board should grant the Town a waiver in its construction of a porch gazebo at the new Town Hall. The planned gazebo area at the corner of the front porch would extend three and a half feet in to the setback area.
The Town’s Growth Management Ordinance does allow exceptions to the setback requirement if other structures in the area also extend in to the setback. A public hearing is first required, however. (At Tuesday’s regular monthly meeting, one commissioner asked if the hearing could happen then; others however said at least 48 hours advance notice was necessary.) The Town Manager, who is acting as general contractor for the construction of the new Town Hall says he wants to pour the concrete for that porch and gazebo and roof supports as early as Friday. The hearing takes place across Broad Street from Town Hall at the First Baptist Church.
