Coming Events in Oriental and in and near Pamlico County

  • Because the 2017 municipal election results were coming in Tuesday night, Oriental’s Town Board moved its November meeting to Wednesday, November 8 at 7p. On the agenda, which you can download here. two public hearings. One, on whether to adopt changes to the Growth Management Ordinance recommended by the Planning Board.(Click here to download the proposed changes to the GMO and Table of Permissible Uses.) Also on the agenda, a public hearing and possible vote on annexing the Piggly WIggly.

The GMO tweaking arose from the now scuttled proposal for a trawler painting facility on the harbor upwind of town. Nothing in the existing ordinance addressed environmental and health concerns. The Planning Board proposes delineating industrial uses of land in town, permits only light and medium industry, and stipulates that in the case of medium industry no pollution from the operation could extend beyond the property line. Another change – to Section 5.00 – would allow institutions – such as schools, museums, art galleries, houses of worship – to be built on lots zoned R1. That’d be a first for lots with that zoning. To compare, click here for the current Table Of Permissible Uses.
