Coming Events in Oriental and in and near Pamlico County

  • On The Second Sunday in August the town of Oriental and any visitors here at the time have had a standing invite. Go to the Bond’s yard and have a slice or two of watermelon. This year, 2017 that 2nd Sunday falls on August 13 and Miss Fay and family start serving slices at 4p.

    The tradition goes back to the 1960’s – the late John Bond would bring watermelons from Bertie County and cut and serve them on the front lawn at Neuse & Ragan. If you’re in town, consider yourself invited. All in all, the scene is one great slice of summer. The Bonds’ guests aren’t the only ones to benefit; a very precise recycling system provides the turtles in the adjacent creek with a plentiful supply of rinds.
