Oriental’s Town Dock, on the Hodges Street side of the harbor, welcomes boats to tie up for 48-hours. Most visiting boats comply and leave after two days. Some may stay a day or two beyond that. Occasionally, though, a boat may stay for a week or more, they draw attention and questions such as the one that letter writer E.S. Mead poses.

Boats Overstaying At Town Dock

November 26, 2012

Dear Editor,

I speak of the photo on the first page of today’s issue of TD. (On-The-Cover photo here, and here.)

We have some friends who visited us last weekend, 11/17, on their way south. We suggested that they tie up to Oriental’s Town Dock. At that time the red vessel shown in your photo was at the dock so there was “no room at the inn” – it appears that she is still there.

This presented a bit of a chore to our friends since they had to anchor a fair ways out and their dink’s outboard was out of service. Is there any way of policing the stays at the dock so that the towns hospitality is not abused?

Best regards

E. S. Mead
Oriental

(There is a ‘way of policing’ to make the Town Dock available to more boaters. If a boat is exceeding the the posted 48-hour limit, one may contact Oriental’s police officer, Lt. Dwaine Moore at 249-0369. (Leave a message if you get the dispatcher.) Dwaine was contacted regarding the boat the writer mentions and it left the Town Dock Sunday afternoon. Editor.)
