News From The Village Updated Almost Daily

Internet Sweepstakes, Electronic Gambling, Adult Entertainment, Tattoo Parlors

December’s Town Board Meeting will be discussing changes to the ordinance allowing Internet Sweepstake facilities in Oriental. This would seem to not be a match with the image that Oriental is trying to promote. With the robbery of two of these establishments in the last month in the Greenville area it would seem an inappropriate time to be considering bringing this to our Village.

The information available in “Internet Sweepstakes Café – A Survey of Law Enforcement Perceptions” by the Governor’s Crime Commission has nothing good to say about these establishments. Per the study, “Many argue that these operations contribute to increasing financial hardships for low-income customers and families as reflected in several national gambling studies (Davis and Moore, 2007). These businesses also serve as hotspots for criminal activity — one consequence of Internet sweepstakes cafés that is largely absent from the tightly regulated and taxed state education lottery”.

Let’s all look into this issue and then make our feeling known to the Town Board before or at the December 4th meeting.
