(As reported last year, Sanderson said that he couldn’t be ‘that kind of politician’ who would have asked his party’s leadership to stop the tolls for his district.) This year, Sanderson has co-sponsored Senate Bill 58 which would increase boat registration fees as much as 10 times over in order to finance a dredging fund that would not appear to pay for any projects in Pamlico County. The Senator’s actions have sparked some comment from Carolyn Howell, Charles C. Garrett…

In his freshman year, 2011, Sanderson voted twice for a budget that imposed the ferry toll, which his constituents continue to try to fend off two years later. Letters: On Representation By Senator Norman Sanderson
Questions on Legislator's Positions
March 27, 2013

A reader shares an open letter to Representative Sanderson.

Norm,

With regards to your stance and enthusiastic support of legislation on ferry tolls and boat registrations, what the heck do you think you’re doing?

I can’t believe I voted for you.

You have hastened my transition from Republican to Independent.

Please leave the legislature now, and save us the pain and expense of a recall.

Sincerely,
Charles C. Garrett

To the Editor:

Over the past year I have read about Senator Norm Sanderson’s stance on ferry tolls for Pamlico County and boat registration fees. I have further read the response from the citizens of the county about his lack of support for their needs and wishes.

Frankly I was surprised when he was re-elected. If he is considered to be a friend of Pamlico County then we certainly don’t need any enemies.
