In January of 2012, a land swap on Oriental’s harbor and riverfront was first proposed between the Town of Oriental and Chris Fulcher, who owns the land surrounding the Town’s rights of way at Avenue A and the harbor front end of South Avenue. Chris Fulcher also owns the concrete block structure with an unfinished roof that has marked the mouth of the harbor for more than a decade, and it is that structure that prompted Marilyn Stern to write and pose a question.

Letters: Roofless Structure & Land Swap
Query On Building At Oriental's Harbor Entrance
March 25, 2013

The letter writer addresses a question raised in a previous letter, about the land swap and Chris Fulcher’s roofless building on Oriental’s harbor.

To The Editor,

No, Marilyn, you did not miss anything. In fact, none of that bit of information about a building sitting unfinished for over a decade made it into any of the “negotiations” for the “land swap”.

I went to the open meetings and nothing was said. It was mentioned that the Town Commission hoped that by making nice with Chris Fulcher, he would make nice with us. Not only that, at a packed with townspeople meeting in the Baptist Church across the street, after the Commission listened to speakers decry the plans presented, the Commission closed the open part of the meeting and hurriedly, and I mean hurriedly, voted to give Chris Fulcher Avenue A, or that road that makes his property contiguous, with no further asking of him for anything back.

I have been told that all further plans stop now while David Cox’s lawsuit is settled. That is, no further negotiations are possible about the town possibly obtaining a piece of property actually large enough to provide the amenities it wishes.

However, whatever bargaining chips the Town may have had for obtaining a large trade from Chris Fulcher are gone because he now has what he needs to make his 2 parcels much more valuable. He has one much larger piece of waterfront property that can be developed in any manner because there is no town road running through it.

We gave it away. Just like that. It is gone.

So why would Chris Fulcher want to put a roof on that building? Why would he want to give us any property that he owns? The deal is finished.

I really do not understand politics. I only understand things that seem logical to me, and none of this seems logical.

To The Editor:

While I don’t read all the news that’s fit to print re: the so called land swap in Oriental, I do keep my ears open.

I have yet to hear or read any provision in a proposed land swap which would include either completion of or demolition of the half-finished structure by the breakwater.

Have I missed something along the way?
