The Oriental Farmers’ Market is happening on Saturday morning, March 20th from 8:30-11:30a at the Wits End.So far, here’s the list of what the vendors have in store for you this week:
What’s For Sale
Brenna is back with Italian herb, French and wholewheat cinnamon raisin breads.
Sandie will have NC apples, mustard greens, kohlrabi and greens, sweet potatoes. Strawberry and Rhubard Jam, Hot and Sweet Pepper Jellies, Rosemary Wine Jelly,Aple Butter, Grand Marnier and Cranberry Compote, and baked goods including Fresh-Baked Bagels, Floourless Choc Cake , Best Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Bob will be there with eggs freshly laid by his Blackwell Point hens.
Ana and Steve will have Red Starr Happy Chicken eggs from their Merritt hens.Broad Street yard pecans that’ve already been shelled.
Bill’s W3 woodworks will be selling cutting boards, baskets and bird houses.
Check back as this list is updated throughout the week when farmers, growers, bakers and artisans let us know if they’ll be at the market and what they’ll be selling.
Looking Ahead A Few Weeks and Months
Some of our growers are tending to the gardens, even in winter, so that they’ll have produce and other goods for you in a few weeks and month.
A sampling:
Blue Bottle Gardens is growing mustard greens, spinach mustard, Russian red kale, Lacinto (aka dinosaur) kale, onions, rapee, beets, Gilfeather turnips. And later in the spring, several varieties of Roadtrip Garlic.
Sandie’s Academy Street Gardens will soon have: Bibb and other lettuce, kale, bok choi and other Asian greens, kohlrabi and raab, leeks, spring onions, spring turnips, several varieties of beets, cabbage, arugula, radishes, Romanesco broccoli, sugar snap peas, snow peas.
Academy Street Gardens will also be selling early season plants for broccoli, cabbage, lettuces, herbs, bok choi, leeks, and other cool season vegetables. When it warms more, Sandie will have varieties of heirloom tomatoes, heat tolerant tomatoes, Tomatoe Spotted Wilt Virus(TSWV)-resistant tomatoes, herbs, eggplant, peppers, and Plants for the Coastal South-mostly perennials and some noteworthy annuals.
Drew Dingley soon will be offering fresh, local, grass-fed and grain-finished pork and beef. In spring he’ll also have goat meat, produce and plants.
And in early April 2010, Dorita Boyd of Raindrop Ridge Herbs returns for one day with an array of herb plants – many of them otherwise hard to find.

As guidelines go, these are pretty simple, so come on down and join us as a vendor.
