T
he Oriental Boat Show is this weekend. The show is open Friday Noon-6pm, Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 10am-5pm. Adults $5, accompanied children under 18 are free. The new section at Pecan Grove Marina has area boat dealers showing a mix of used and brokerage yachts. As well as the boats and vendors in tents, a schedule of seminars is set:

Friday April 17
  • 12noon Nautical Music
  • 1pm Doug Brenner, West Marine Manager, “Modern Marine Electronics” Hear about what’s new and what they can do.
  • 2pm Doug Alvord, marine historian, “Evolution and Fate of N.C. Working Craft” Trace the history of fishing craft from the colonial period to modern vessels.
  • 3pm Roger Wetherington, Jarrett Bay Boat Works, “Boat Alarm Systems Overview” Learn what systems are needed to keep your boat safe and running smoothly.
  • 4pm Mark Lucas, Sailcraft Services rigger, “Care and Feeding for Your Standing Rigging” Spot and prevent rigging failure before your mast comes down.
  • 5pm Luann Parins, Inner Banks Sails & Canvas, “Care and Feeding of Your Canvas and Sails” What do you need to do to make your fabric investment last. (LuAnn can also answer questions about sail trim and her Americas Cup sail making experience!)
Saturday April 18
  • 10am Jim Edwards, “Oriental’s Youth Sailing Program” Kids are learning the ropes in North Carolina’s Sailing Capital.
  • 11am Susan Koepp, “Yoga on Board” Stretch out those tired muscles after a day of hauling lines.
  • 12noon John Deaton, Deaton Yacht Services, “Diesel Engine Maintenance” Keep your machine humming smoothly.
  • 1pm Larry Baldwin, Lower Neuse Riverkeeper, “How to Use the River While Protecting the Waters” Learn how to do your part for water quality.
  • 2pm Chris Ellis, Paddle Pamlico, “Kayak Fishing 101” Learn why this is the fastest growing fishing trend.
  • 3pm Eddie Jones, “Not a Yacht Happening – How to get a Free Boat” Humorist and columnist shares his insights on affordable boats.
  • 4pm Capt. Larry Walker, World Wide Marine Training, “Survival Craft Launching Demonstrations” learn about the proper use of life rafts, immersion suits, inflatable PFDs and see them deployed.
  • 5pm Capt. Gary Dubiel, Spec Fever, “Fishing the Neuse River” Gary reveals the secrets of reeling the big ones.
Sunday April 19
  • 10am Carla and Graham Bynres, B&B Yacht Design, “Ask Graham” Learn about boat design, boat building, cruising, racing and all things nautical.
  • 11am Sean Prendergast, NC MarTec Instructor, “Corrosion Short Course” Identify types and causes of corrosion and how to prevent them.
  • 12noon Capt. Larry Walker, World Wide Marine Training, “Survival At Sea (While Treading Water)” Learn about the threats of cold water and hypothermia, as well as tropical weather and heat stroke/exhaustion.
  • 1pm Capt. Paul Del Rio, Coast Guard Auxiliary, “Emergency Pyrotechnic Flare Demonstration”
