The large fishing trawlers, usually out catching shrimp mid-week, were coming in to Oriental’s harbor Wednesday to ride out the hurricane. The crew of the Shelley Lewis showed up around sunset.
The trawler “Kaitlyn” had already arrived.
A coming hurricane didn’t keep the three men on board “Little Lady” from their nightly fishing. With an empty anchorage, the “Little Lady” crew had more area to drag their net for shrimp as their boat’s hull was catching the last glimmer’s of Wednesday’s light. The brick walls at the end of South Water Street, originally in place to hold tanks, have been around for many hurricanes and “high water events.” How high will Earl’s waters go up those walls?[page]
