Foggy Pudding
Covers the Waterfront Tuesday
December 11, 2007

Foggy weather rolled in to Oriental and other waterfront areas of Pamlico County and lingered for more than 6 hours Tuesday. This was no mere thin blanket of fog as much as a heavy down comforter.

While nearby towns a few miles further inland enjoyed unseasonable warmth, the temperatures in Oriental went south in a hurry — a 15 degree drop was noted within an hour mid-morning —- and Oriental experienced a micro-climate that drew comparisons to Maine or San Francisco.

The fog transformed familiar scenes along the waterfront.

A trawler returns to the inner harbor in the fog Tuesday afternoon.
A sailboat ghosts towards the Town Dock.
Impressionistic scenes rolled in with the fog, such as this view of the Oriental Bridge and Greens Creek from the small boat ramp on Midyette Street.
View from the Dinghy Dock, South Water Street. The sun was back there, somewhere.
View from the new pier at Lou Mac Park. Visibility: diminished.
The fog made mid-afternoon skies look as though sunset had come an hour or two early. At least one boat needed help getting in.
