High School Sailors in Raleigh Regatta
First Season Includes A Race in Oriental
November 20, 2015

T
he sailing team made up of Pamlico County High School sailors kicked off their first season of competition on Saturday November 14. Coach Jim Edwards says the high school sailors “had a very respectable first regatta” on Lake Crabtree in Raleigh. The team of four, made up of two crews, came away with a 7th place finish.

The A division crew of Alexis Edwards and Caroline James – the only female crew in the entire regatta — finished 4th overall, just 2 points out of second, Jim Edwards notes. Pamlico’s B Crew of sailors Ben Bruno and Alden Sylvester placed 10th overall.

“They learned a great deal and had many segments of great sailing,” says Edwards. “They are all looking forward to more time on the water together and improving their skills.”

This school year marks the first time a team of Pamlico high school students is taking part in multiple regattas. They’ll have to travel a bit further afield for some of them. After the holidays, regattas are set for Charleston SC, Beaufort SC, Charlotte, Raleigh (again), and possibly Georgia.

They’ll also be the home team later in the season. Jim Edwards says he just confirmed this week that Oriental’s first South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association regatta for high schoolers will take place on April 9-10, 2016, which is also the weekend of the Oriental Boat Show. They’ll use the FJ’s at Edwards’ Bow to Stern Boating Center and race a course just outside the breakwater.

“The regatta should draw sailors from North and South Carolina,” Edwards says, “as well as possibly Georgia and Florida.” That could bring an additional 100+ people to town, he anticipates.

Edwards welcomes community support for the high school sailors in their first full season. That could mean, he says, “volunteering, watching them sail, or sponsoring one of the FJs.”
