High Water on Hodges and Beyond
Wednesday Afternoon
September 25, 2008

T
he winds and waters kept coming Wednesday afternoon filling Hodges street with water along the waterfront.

The Town Dock is under there.
Not walking on water, but making it look that way. Jack strolls the submerged Town Dock Wednesday afternoon.
But it was gulls and other birds who occupied the Town Dock for most of the afternoon.
Susie Smith models a pair of boots — the Nancy Drew look, she says — needed to get through the wet street.
Vehicles were rare, but some still plowed through.
Some residents posted a “No Wake Zone” sign……. but to little effect.
A town resident with a magic marker handy, amended the High Water sign to spell out why you didn’t want to take your vehicle through the foot deep water.

Through it all, the dragon in the Duck Pond, acting as wind vane, kept pointing to the north and northeast. Meanwhile, all that wind pushed more water on to Hodges, in the foreground.
The water was covering more than the pavement. It flooded the yard of the Wits End. A banner there advertises the upcoming Pamlico Paddle which will not take place on Hodges Street.
Eric Kindle and Susan King carry Sue Henry’s paintings from the WIts End so they wouldn’t be threatened if water crept in to the gallery space.
Sandie Beale takes some more paintings to higher ground.
A man bikes through the foot-high water of Hodges Street. In the foreground, one of Paddle Pamlico’s kayaks, which would be the better way to get thru part of town Wednesday.
Water, water everywhere, but nothing tying up.
A block away, the water was even deeper on Main Street near Factory.

The floating docks at the Wildlife Ramp, usually mean a walk down, but the water floated the docks up.
A lot of the water came up on land, where two trucks were parked. .
Down (though not exactly facing east…) .
In the heavy winds Wednesday afternoon, an argiope spider holds its own at the kayak launch area.
Dinghy dock.
Pedals against the wind tide..
Watery scene meets water scene.
Water covers the Town Dock.
