The job of repainting the Old Theater is almost done.
Toni Leavitt and Susan Cheatham have spent more than a month putting a series of swirls — Susan calls them Leavitt Swirls — on the exterior.
They hope to have the last swirls up by next week’s opening of the Pelican Player’s 2007-2008 season.
Susan and Toni could be seen in recent weeks applying the paint by hand, either high up on scaffolding….
.. or closer to sidewalk level.
They say they used ten different paint colors — and did some intermixing between those gallons.
(Susan Cheatham says Sherwin Williams may use the work in a promotion.)
With most of the main wall facing Broad Street now done, the two artists are turning their attention to other details. One of them is the theater’s porch floor.
They’ve already painted it a grape purple and plan to put flecks of blue on that. This could redefine the “Oriental rug”
If you stop by in the next week, you may also see them putting some swirls on the Church Street side, and working on a topping for the marquee.
And if a bucket-truck can be arranged from a local tree service, they may be adding some curlicues near the top of the building.
The hope is to have it done by the time the doors open on October 25th for the play, “Divorce Southern Style”
