Oriental Boat Show 2014 Working Skiff

Heber Guthrie came to the Oriental Boat Show with a crew from Down East in Carteret County, and a plan. That was, to build a 14’ sailing or rowing skiff out of one inch thick juniper boards using some traditional methods.Heber Guthrie with the boat.Heber Guthrie and the crew worked on it during the Boat Show on Saturday and Sunday as onlookers stopped by and asked questions. The boat rather quickly took shape. And then – also as part of the plan — it was raffled off by the Oriental Rotary Club.
Henry Campen held the winning ticket. Sam Myers, organizer of the Rotary’s Boat Show, says the raffle brought in about $2,500. He says that Heber Guthrie wants to return and build a boat for next year’s boat show.

There were many hardworking people who made the Boat Show happen. Victoria Hyatt was asked if she’d take on the job of picking he winning raffle ticket.
