S
ome came with tiaras, others, sailor suits, motorcycle garb, a lions mane. Some wore just leashes. One entry was just a leash. In all, 115 dogs and about as many owners took part in Oriental’s Third Annual Pet Parade.

Kathy Meyer — shown here in red liontamer’s jacket at the mid-way point of the parade — says Jefferson was supposed to be a lion; but when his mane costume turned out more like a daisy, he came as a dandelion instead. The judges liked it. He was Best in Show.

The judges decided the top dog, Best in Show was Kathy Meyer’s Jefferson, a yellow lab, tricked out as a lion.

Best In Show: Jefferson.

Overcast skies throughout the morning dampened the turnout a bit. 115 dogs took part, just shy of last year’s 125. The rains held off and Oriental’s dogs had their day.

The event raised more than $1500 for the Pamlico Animal Welfare Society.

Following are photos of some of the winners and participants:

Cosmo, a teacup chihuahua arrived in one, and with some help from Sally Belangia, won the Smallest Dog category.
Boys and One Very Large Puppy Tail. Ben and Zachary Bruno and one of their two Anatolian Shepherds. Rowland, who took honors for Most Unusual is 4 months old and when full grown will weigh upwards of 150 pounds.
Pamlico County’s new Animal Control Officer Trinity Smith’s dog Uno had the longest tail. Trinity was also a judge, but this category was not a subjective opinion and no conflict of interest was found. (One of the other judges — in wig — stands to the side.)
Ann Steiger’s dog Chelsea won for Cutest Puppy.

There were thirteen categories for the judges to make awards in. They added a fourteenth, “Sweetest”, along the way because the “Cute” category only applied to puppies. “Samantha” a basset hound who’s about 100 in human years, was judged “Sweetest”.

In the new, “Sweetest” category, the winner was Samantha, more than a dozen years old. She poses here with Judy Wayland. Also on the trailer/stage was Jeff Aydelette, MC for the event.
If there were a Sherlock Holmes award for the “Dog Who Didn’t Bark” it would have gone to Brittney and Bryant Beaulieu of Greenville. Bryant says his dog’s name is Spotless.
