Sailing Capital of NC Banners For Broad and Hodges Streets
First Though, Donations Needed
July 29, 2008

For years, Oriental resident Art Tierney has wanted to have banners along the town’s main streets that proclaim Oriental as the Sailing Capital of NC. That may be happening soon.

Art Tierney shows the prototype at a Town Board meeting in June.

A company in Raleigh will make the banners that will hang all year along Hodges and Broad Streets, just as the holiday banners now do during the Christmas season. All of that takes money and a fundraising campaign is underway.

Marlene Miller of the Tourism Board says the banners will cost $90 apiece and that the aim is to get at least two dozen. So far, about $1600 has been raised, Marlene says, but a bit more is needed for reinforced brackets for the utility poles from which they will hang.

If you’d like to contribute, send a check to Oriental Town Hall, PO Box 472, Oriental, NC 28571. Make the check out to Town Of Oriental, and in the memo area write “banner” so they know to put the money in the right place.

The color will be a darker shade of blue than is shown here. Also, the graphic will be entirely white. (It was determined that the yellow sun would eventually fade in the real one.)

There’s no room on the banners to list the sponsors and contributors, but TownDock.net is offering to show a list of the donors.
