Sounds of Greens Creek
An Early Morning Audio Expedition
July 30, 2012

I
magine leaving the Town Dock by boat and traveling up Greens Creek until you come to a beaver dam. Then just listening. One morning, just before dawn, the Town Dock staff did just that.

Here is what we found. Listen carefully – birds, bugs, the sounds of dawn. You can even hear a muskrat chewing.

The arrow marks the beaver dam. The recording was made in its vicinity. It is a little over 3 miles by water from the Town Dock.
The head of Greens Creek moments after sunrise
The channel narrows. Though wide at its mouth, the body of water narrows to the point that entering craft have to back their way out. There isn’t room to turn around.
The beaver dam. This barrier at the end of Greens Creek signals the end of navigable waters. The waters behind it is home to marsh loving flowers and animals.
The end of Greens Creek is too shallow for outboard engines. In many places, it is under a foot deep. To reach the beaver dam, a paddle comes in handy.
Moss
Early mornings, Greens Creek birds are more easily heard than seen. The reedy marsh makes them hard to spot. Here, a green heron perches on the waterline.
