The 2014 British Open at Minnesott
Supporting Pamlico High Golf
July 24, 2014

T
he British Open at Minnesott was held on Saturday, July 19th at the Minnesott Golf & County Club. It was the third of four golfing events in The Majors at Minnesott series.

The Majors at Minnesott events coincide with the four Majors golf tournaments. They are the Masters, the US Open, the British Open and the PGA. The Majors at Minnesott events are held on the same Saturday as each of the world famous Masters tournaments takes place. They are open to the public. The events raise funds for Pamlico High School’s golf team, helping pay for golf equipment, course upkeep, lessons and travel.

The winner of the British Open takes home the Golf Champion Trophy, better known as the Claret Jug. This year, taking home what looked a lot like the Claret Jug, were British Open at Minnesott winners Jayne Demers and Rick Andrews. The trophy actually came from England.

This year’s event featured a connection to the legendary British Open. Mark Calcavecchia, the 1989 British Open champion, donated a signature Ping golf bag, several golf clubs, golf gloves & golf balls. The items served as raffle prizes to support the Pamlico County Golf Team which was re-established this year.

In addition to over 30 enthusiastic golfers, the British Open at Minnesott drew over 60 sponsors. Event sponsor was Robinson & Stith Insurance. Joe Alcoke Chevrolet was the Hole-in-One sponsor. Sponsor support made it possible for Pamlico County High School to hire Scott Fitzgerald as the golf coach and compete in the Coastal Plains Conference. PCHS placed third in the conference with two golfers qualifying for the regionals.

Non-revenue sports, such as golf and cross-country track, are often overlooked when it comes to scholarship awards. The Richard Wells Walker Scholarship Fund announced that in 2015 a $20,000.00 scholarship will be given to a senior member of the Pamlico County High School golf team and/or a senior member of the Pamlico County cross-country track team. As with any Walker Award, emphasis is placed on a strong academic record, character and leadership qualities. The athlete must demonstrate a strong commitment to their respective non-revenue sport.

The final event in the Majors at Minnesott series, The PGA at Minnesott, will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2014. The Wannamaker Trophy will be awarded to the Men’s and Women’s PGA Champions. The Minnesott Cup will also be awarded to the man and woman who have accumulated the most points in this series of tournaments.
