Update: Poisoning Confirmed in Two Buccaneer Bay Dog Deaths
$500 Reward Being Offered
May 13, 2008

S
uspicions of poisoning have been confirmed in the deaths of two Buccaneer Bay dogs last week.

Pamlico Animal Control officer Trinity Smith said Monday night that an initial report from a diagnostic lab indicates that the dogs “died of exposure to an insecticide.”

Smith added that the insecticide in question is, “not Raid,” but rather is a “type not commonly found in the home.”

Nor, she said, is it easily obtained. It’s used on farms, Smith said, and to gain access to it, “you have to have a special license.”

Smith said that Caroline Bliss, whose two dogs died a week ago Sunday, did not have that insecticide in her home. That rules out the possibility that the dogs got in to the poison accidentally.

More malicious intentions appear to be the case.

In light of this confirmation of poisoning, a $500 reward is being offered. The Pamlico Animal Welfare Society, PAWS, is providing the reward money for information that leads to the arrest and conviction for whoever is responsible for the recent poisonings. (Update: 5/14/08 Reward has now been raised to $1200)

According to PAWS secretary Cynthia Shockley, the information — which may be given confidentially — should go directly to Trinity Smith at 745-3203.

Smith said she would appreciate leads that the public might provide. It may be a case, she said, that a memory is jogged about seeing something that stood out. Perhaps, she says, a person recalled, “someone driving” in the neighborhood

Meanwhile, Smith says tests are also underway, to determine if rat poison was also present in the 2 dog’s bodies.

Cynthia Shockley says that PAWS welcomes contributions to the reward fund. If you’d like to increase the size of the reward beyond the initial $500, contact PAWS at 745-PAWS (7297).

Approximately 15 cats and dogs have died or taken ill in the neighborhood in the last half year. Rat poison was found in a separate incident in which two cats died. To read the initial account of the dog poisonings, click here.
