The northern coast of South America apparently has some young sailing talent. The victor in the 2014 Youth Sunfish Worlds at Camp Sea Gull NC (near Oriental)… 17 year old David Gonzalez Arria of Venezuela. Thirty seven competitors from six countries participated in the championship open to sailors under age 19. South American sailors took 8 of the top 10 slots.

David Gonzalez Arria is all smiles after securing victoryHolding a slim two point lead going into the final race of the nine race series, David Gonzalez Arria of Venezuela stayed ahead of his closest competitor and finished third in the race to win the series. Alonso Collantes of Peru was seventh in the final race to finish second overall. Finishing strong in the last two days of racing and rounding out the top three was Daniela Rodriguez of Ecuador. John Birkett also representing Ecuador was fourth and Chase Carraway of the United States finished in fifth.

With the Youth World Championship complete – next is the Sunfish World Championship with seventy two sailors. New Sunfish sailboats are being chartered to all sailors by Triton Yacht Sales. Twelve races are scheduled in the World Championship running from Mon Oct 13 through Thu Oct 16 (with Fri as a reserve day if necessary).
