The American Lines cruise ship, Independence stopped for several hours in Oriental Tuesday on its way north. It’s the second of three cruise ships to visit this spring. Passengers took a few hours to walk in town. Meanwhile, at least one local sailor used the big ship’s visit to test his AIS (Automatic Identification System) receiver; he reports that from a mile or two away, the cruise ship set off an alarm, as it’s supposed to do.
