Near the Lou Mac pier, a multi-sensor gauge that the NC Division of Emergency Management installed last week. It’ll take readings on the river, and could give the state and weather service info about surge levels during storms. (To see the full length of the gauge, click here.)

This newly installed gauge near the Lou Mac Pier will send data, such as that about waves and water height, to the NC Division of Emergency Management. Oriental is now one of 18 communities along the coast and eastern NC rivers to have one of the $20,000 gauges.

Shearwater on high water. The visiting Canadian boat was tied up to the Town Dock Friday afternoon when a north wind also paid a visit. The wind tide pushed water almost over the Town Dock and flooded Hodges Street.
