A slick of oil and diesel covered much of Oriental’s harbor last night. By 7pm, its smell was noticeable a block away. A boater told Oriental police that he had earlier seen black liquid pouring from a white trawler in the upper left background of this photo. By the time the Coast Guard Pollution Control unit from Fort Macon arrived — it was after 10:30pm – two inches of rain had fallen and apparently dissipated the spill. Investigators were in town Tuesday. We have the story – here.
