News From The Village Updated Almost Daily

Mr February 2004 - Bosun
Top man at the fitness club

Bosun at the door
B
osun is the first fellow you may meet on any visit to The Village Club in Oriental. The family pet of club owners John & Jan LaGuardia, Bosun greeted your Pet Of The Month editor at the door.

We were first made aware of Bosun by a story that linked him to Buddy – Mr October. The story made Buddy out to be a villain….but the fair and balanced Pet Of The Month crew will let you decide…

The story we got from the LaGuardias goes like this:

After Buddy became famous with his Pet of the Month designation, ole trusting Bosun listened and followed Buddy’s ways. Buddy came by the club one day and talked Bosun into a walk around the village.

Buddy headed across Highway 55 to begin the village tour. While Buddy (black dog with short legs) snuck under the traffic Bosun (black dog with long legs) wasn’t so fortunate. Bosun was immediately smacked by the first fast moving car (reports estimate the vehicle at 35-40 mph) …… “thrown into the air suffering mild trauma to his right shoulder”.

Bosun during his recovery phase
Village Club staffer Heather Breon adds “recovery was quick only because Bosun was in top physical shape at age 10, a result of hanging out at the fitness club.”

A regimen of exercise and physical therapy brought Bosun back into shape

The LaGuardia’s add that Bosun retains no ill feelings towards Buddy.

Heather with Bosun. Although sweet and innocent by all appearances, our investigation has revealed that Heather may have been the mastermind behind the fabricated “Buddy the villain” story.
Pet of the Month Writer Investigates…
There appears to be more to this tale. Catching Village Club massage & yoga guru Heather Breon off guard …. she slipped up and seems to add suspicion to the story ….. the truth (overheard at an area coffee establishment) is that on the day of this incident, Bosun was just goofin’ off out back. Buddy innocently walked onto the health club’s grounds, and territorial Bosun took off after him with malice in his eyes. Buddy immediately did the normal and only smart thing …… he ran.

Buddy ran across Highway 55, and Bosun followed… neglecting to check for traffic.

The Good News …

Bosun answering questions about the incident
Bosun only spent an hour or so at the Vet’s office, but it was a difficult time for both Bosun and all at the Village Health & Fitness Club where he has a loyal following. However, now Bosun has fully recovered and lays around just as lazy and comfy as before.

Bosun’s owners hint he may be of royal linage up in Martha’s Vineyard (40 27’N, 70 35’W), with a family history related to that famous Vineyard institution, the "Black Dog Tavern". But Bosun headed south about two years ago with John and Jan LaGuardia, son Robbie, daughter Katie, Marshmallow the Cat and Frank the Iguana. They now make Oriental (35 1.5’ N, 76 41.9’ W) and The Village Club their home.

Bosun now keeps a respectful distance from Highway 55

Bosun – Mister February.
