Miss September 2002 - Lucy

The organizers of TownDock.net's Pet of the Month Pageant had some tough calls to make this month.

There were a good many nominations for dogs from Oriental and around the county. In fact, there were so many wonderful candidates that we were tempted to take the lead from the Miss North Carolina pageant and have TWO Pets of the Month. But on reflection it was decided that that kind of cat fight was something we wouldn't wish on a dog.

And so...
The winner of TownDock.net's Pet of the Month for September is Lucy, who lives with Nancy Crain and Darrell Wiard on Ball Creek in Florence. Nancy says Lucy is "part Chow and part Other" and was still a puppy when they found her on St. Patrick's Day, 2000 on Lee Farm Road.

"She was abused and so thin her ribs stuck out even under all that fur." And, says Nancy, she wouldn't let anyone near her. But Darrell persisted, working for days to lure her home. "After a couple of days and a couple of boxes of dog bones and a couple of packages of bacon, she followed the car as he left. So he drove about 100 yards and left peanut butter and bacon on the road, and she followed, until she was in our yard."

"She loves to go with us on the boat, in the canoe, in the car, on foot. She likes to swim and will cross Ball Creek to visit (bark at) the neighbors and chase rabbits. She even knows how to climb the ladder to get back in the boat!"

Nancy adds "She also has a quirky habit of biting us on the butt when we fish. Who knows where that came from?!"

TownDock.net Pet of the Month Pageant officials heard tell that there were photos that caught Lucy in that act. Unlike some other pageants, such photos would only have endeared her more to the judges. Alas, the bite-the-butt-of-the-fisherman photos could not be found.

An attempt was made to recreate the butt-biting scene, with Darrell Waird using a foot long stick to simulate fishing off the Town Dock. Lucy however, wasn't buying the act, nor biting Darrell. Darrell, who is perhaps better known for his Precision Lawn Chair choreography in Croaker Festival Parades, did score high points with the judges watching from across the street.
