Mister December 2002 - Noname....err...Orville!

The judges here at Town Dock.net didn’t have to look far to find the holiday spirit in our December Pet Of The Month.

The story starts last week, when Jane Tindall was driving home to Vandemere. She posted this ad on the TownDock.net Classifieds.

Found: Kitten Thrown From Car Window

Please give this "Throw Away" kitten a loving home. I picked her up from the middle of Highway 307 after some idiot tossed her out of his car window, with traffic coming from both ways! She was very disoriented, with eye swollen shut and a scraped nose. I wasn't sure she would live through the night...but she's eating now and doesn't go far from my side.

She's about 6 weeks old, grey w/white nose, paws & chest.... very soft and very loving. I need to find a good home for her ASAP. Please give this loving little heart the chance in life she deserves.

Struck by the urgency of the situation, we put Jane’s ad on the front page of TownDock . Soon after we did, an email came in from Barbara Deighton who lives in Pennsylvania. Barbara wasn’t ready to adopt the little cat, but she did make a brilliant suggestion.

Why don’t you feature the kitten that was thrown from the car? I'm a little too far away to adopt her myself, but with a feature story, I bet she would find a loving home. Besides, it's a real Christmas heart breaker.

We had to agree. Jane did too, and made plans to bring the kitten over for some photos. Veterinarian Dr. Bob Moore even agreed to provide a birth exam and shots free to the cat once someone adopted him. (Yes - him. A more thorough examination of the kitten led Jane to realize she was a he.)

Jane brought the little guy over for his "photo session."

Orville shows his newfound spunk

When we snapped some pictures of him the other morning, he seemed a different cat from the one Jane remembers "kept falling down when he tried to stand up". Instead he was full of life and spunk and romped a lot. He also really liked the human touch and would cuddle for a long time with whoever was holding him.

We told a few folks what we were doing, and before we could even post the story & photos - an adoptive family emerged. We are pleased to say the Highway 307 kitten has been adopted by Cheryl Huff of Oriental. In fitting tribute to his flying entrance onto Highway 307 - the little fellah has been named Orville ( of flying Wright Brothers fame).

Orville checks out non-flying duck

A few weeks into life, Orville is lucky to be alive. But very alive he is, and settling down into a new life in Oriental.

Thank you and a salute go to Orville's Highway Savior - Jane Tindall. Congratulations to the Pet Of The Month - Orville - proud to be Mister December 2002.
