Jim
Gray of Oriental sailed to victory Saturday in the 17th annual
Whortonsville Yacht & Tractor Club
Summer
Solstice Sailebration aboard his Americat 30 catamaran "Detour". Charlie
Garrett placed second and Art Tierney took third place honors
in the 35 boat fleet.
Jim Gray was awarded the coveted "Whortonsville Cup" at
the awards ceremony following the event. While they made
a fuss about the Stanley Cup in Raleigh recently - it is lacking
a key feature the coveted Whortonsville Cup conveys to its
winner. The Whortonsville Cup is filled with cookies baked
by last year’s
champion. It
is also the only sailing cup trophy that, as Yacht & Tractor
Club Commodore Nick Santoro points out - "looks like a
cup".

even look like a cup...more like a fancy teapot.

The first
three boats got a fitting trophy for their finish - Commodore
Nick presented them with a model John Deere tractor.

To
motivate us slow sailors to finish in the top 3
in future years, here is the John Deere tractor
trophy up close. Notice the #2 on the "bimini".

They
really do have a tractor at the Whortonsville Yacht
& Tractor Club. WYTC Commodore Nick Santoro
demonstrates a bigger version of the models
given away as prizes.

The ten
mile long race was held this past Saturday, June 24th, in
the lower Neuse River near Whortonsville. The first
Whortonsville race was in 1990, and though a growing
number of sailors have tried, no one has ever won this race
more than once – that record still stands. Winning
the race gets one honors, accolades, and the right to hold
the Whortonsville Cup for a year. But it also earns the winner
a note in the WYTC ratings book - and a tougher rating when
competing in future years.
