The Optimist is, quite simply, the dinghy in which the young people of the world learn to sail.
Sailed in over 110 countries by over 150,000 young people,
it is the ONLY dinghy approved by the International Sailing Federation exclusively for sailors under 16 years of age.
At the Athens Olympics over 60% of the skippers and 70% of the medal winning skippers were former Optimist sailors.

1.13m (3’8”) wide
Weight 35kg (77lbs)
Sail Area: 35 sq. feet.
Safe and simple enough for a 7-year old, each boat carries three flotation bags, insuring a buoyant, self-righting boat.
The Opti is also exciting and technical enough for a 15-year old.
Our fleet currently consists of 10 wooden Optis and 2 Fiberglass Optis. They all have new hardware, rigging and sails.
The History of the Sunfish
Designed in 1951, the Sunfish is a miracle of simplicity and function:
The sailplan requires just two lines to control and the boat can be set up in less than five minutes. The patented kick-up rudder system allows full beach landings with no problems. The hard-chined hull and low sail plan provide unmatched stability and a forgiving feel. The Sunfish hull is light but built with sturdy Vanguard construction ensuring years of virtually maintenance free enjoyment. The Sunfish combines performance, stability and durability in a package that appeals to beginners and experts alike.
With over 500,000 Sunfish out there, and over 1000 race events annually, it is quite possibly the most popular recreational sailboat built.

FJ / Flying Jr.
Sailors graduating from the Optimist class and have experience with the Sunfish will find the FJs to be manageable and a lot of fun. It is safe for young sailors and quick enough to keep experienced sailors challenged. Teamwork, racing skills, and advanced safety knowledge will be part of the challenges in sailing this popular boat.
24 FJs in our fleet
