Coming Events in Oriental and in and near Pamlico County

Lighthouses on the NC Coast

Oriental’s History Museum presents a new exhibit: Lighthouses on our Coast, September 16 through January 2023.

The Oriental History Museum’s new exhibit explores the long history of lighthouse lore in the area and of the seven lighthouses from Corolla down to Oak Island along the North Carolina Coast. The Steamer Oriental went aground on the Outer Banks near the original site of the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

The surrounding area is home to several small lighthouses; most famously are the remains of the Broad Creek Lighthouse once manned by the Quidley family of the town of Pamlico. An Oriental family worked as volunteers at the Cape Lookout lighthouse wearing costumes, living in the lighthouse and describing the life of a keeper and family.

Come find out what lights a lighthouse…what do the various patterns and colorings of the lighthouses mean…which lighthouse and keeper’s home was moved… which lighthouses are still in operation…what it’s like being a keeper…were there female keepers?

The Oriental History Museum is at 802 Broad Street. Hours are: Friday 11-3 and Saturday 1-4. Admission is always free, donations gratefully accepted. For more information about the museum and this exhibit contact us: museum@dockline.net
