Planning Bd Mtg - Oct 12 - Tweaking GMO Changes, Zoning The Pig

Oriental’s Planning Board meets for a specially called meeting on Thursday morning, October 12, from 10a-12noon. 2 big items are before the PB. One concerns the proposed changes to the GMO that the Planning Board recently recommended to the Town Board. The Town Board sent them back to be tweaked following comments made at a public hearing last week.

Among the PB’s proposed changes to the GMO, industries would have to keep pollutants within an enclosed space or within their property line. That change, protecting neighbors and town, came in the wake of the past year’s controversy over a proposed trawler-painting operation on Oriental’s harbor While reviewing the GMO to address those issues, a majority of the Planning Board had also recommended loosening the zoning to allow institutions – churches, libraries, schools – in the neighborhoods zoned R1. One PB member, Bonnie Knapp raised her concerns with that R1 change to the Town Board.

The Planning Board is also to discuss what zoning should be assigned to the Piggly Wiggly if it is annexed into Town. Owner Billy Flockhart recently requested annexation and that petition – with zoning possibly recommended by the PB – goes to the Town Board at its meeting on November 8.

The Planning Board’s Thursday meeting at Town Hall is open to the public.
