Ashley Erwin writes in with an alert for local fishermen. Vibrio Vulnificus is a waterborne bacteria that can be in our waters during the summer months:


Just to give everyone a heads up. One of our neighbors that lives on Smith Creek got infected by the bacteria “Vibrio Vulnificus” while handling his crab trap. He has been hospitalized almost one week now.

This is a dangerous bacteria and everyone needs to be aware of it and take precautions when working around the water fishing, hauling crab traps, etc. I would suggest work gloves, washing hands thoroughly with soap and water, Hydrogen Peroxide, etc.. If you get scratched, stuck by a fin, disinfect it.
