The Silos Restaurant, Florence-Whortonsville Fire Department and Oriental resident Elizabeth Buckman took top honors on Saturday at the 6th Annual Chowder Cookoff. Organized by the Oriental Woman’s Club, the event drew 440 people who sampled the chowders, and then voted.Roland ParĂ© and Chris Daniels of The Silos Restaurant at Saturday’s OWC Chowder Cook-Off. The Silos won two first place awards — the top honors from the blind tasting by a trio of judges, as well as the People’s Choice award based on ballots filled out by the public.The public picked the winner in the People’s Choice award, after sampling the wares. Separately, a trio of judges did a Blind Tasting and came up with their choices.

Elizabeth Bruckman took top place in the Blind Tasting while the Florence-Whortonsville volunteer firefighters won the People’s Choice, in the individual category.
The 6th Annual Chowder Cook-Off was the most successful yet, says Linda Parker of the OWC. More than $4,000 was raised.

Bama Lutes Deal of the Village Food Emporium .Armed with spoon for the taste testing.This was the first year that Pamlico Rescue competed in the Chowder Cook-Off. Their efforts got them a second place in the People’s Choice.Alexis Kisby and the island theme. She dressed in a Hawaiian hula skirt and served Manhattan style clam chowder. Alexis won the Panache award.Mac Rubel and Jeff Hochteil of the Arapahoe Volunteer Fire Deparatment. There was lobster in the chowder as well as on Mac’s head.Cynthia Cochran and Ben Reese were part of the “Save The Lobster – Eat More Shrimp” team.Also part of the “Save The Lobster – Eat More Shrimp” team, two dogs dressed as lobster and chef. They posed for photos and raised $50 for OWC.[page]
Channel 12 Meteorologist Skip Waters was one of the trio of judges and shared some of their comments before Linda Parker of the Oriental Woman’s Club announced the winners.HarborSounds performed at the Chowder Cook-off.Fiddler Kaitlyn Spain shared the stage with HarborSounds during the Chowder Cook-Off.OWC had a number of its members circulating as “Chowder Workers”.Bucket Brigade. Oriental’s newest restaurant, the Sea Shanty, which opened just over a week ago took part in the restaurant competition.Anne Marie Thadeio took third place in the judges’ Blind Tasting.Melanie Gordon, accepting one of the Toucan Grill’s two second place awards in the 2013 Chowder Cook-Off.Alexis Kisby took the Panache award, given by OWC for the best theme for a contestant. Alexis took the Aloha route, with a Hawaiian theme, while serving up Manhattan clam chowder. It was in keeping with an island theme.
