1936 Rolls Royce. A ’73 Triumph. And a 2017 Corvette. All were at the 4th Annual Oriental Car Show, vying for the people’s choice award.

Despite rescheduling (due to Hurricane Florence) and the the threat of rain, the show went on. The Rotary Club of Oriental set up tents and speakers across from Lou Mac Park, and shut down South Ave facing the Neuse. At 8:30a, coffee was ready and registration was open.

Muscle cars, antiques, classics, corvettes, moderns: they all showed up with owners ready to talk shop and tell stories of restorations and remodels.

This year’s show drew attendees from well beyond Pamlico and New Bern; from as far off as Sneads Ferry, Swansboro, and Raleigh. There were the familiar vehicles like Billy Creech’s 51 Ford Pickup, seen around Oriental year-round. Then there were rarer pieces like the 1987 Citroën (Deux Chevaux) and a race-track ready 1966 Ford GT 40.

This isn’t just a car that looks fast. It’s an actual race car. A similar Ford GT 40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an endurance race held in France, from 1966 to 1969.

Children voted for their favorite cars, too.

An appropriate prize for a car show.

• 1st place: Mike Morgan, Swansboro – 1950 MG TD
• 2nd place: David Langston, Dover – 1967 Porsche 912

Best C1-C2 Corvette

• 1st place: Carol Wynne, Oriental – 1962 Corvette convertible (3rd year in a row)

Best C3 & later Corvette

• 1st place: Hank Hibbs, Newport – 2017 GS
• 2nd place: Jim Merkel, Greenville – 2017 C7

Best Custom Car

• 1st place: Buddy Clark, Newport – 1961 Chevrolet Impala
• 2nd place: Pete Juner, Oriental – 1940 Chevrolet Deluxe

Best Custom Truck

• 1st place: John Mitchell, Merritt – 1936 Ford Model A pickup
• 2nd place: George Steenson, Oriental – 1955 Chevrolet 3600 pickup

Best Modern

• 1st place: Stanley Feigenbaum, Arapahoe – 1987 Citroen 2CV
• 2nd place (tie): Rickie Henries, New Bern – 2015 Dodge Challenger
• 2nd place (tie): Jeremiah Day, Oriental – 2002 Pontiac Trans Am

Kid’s Choice Award

• Danny Lloyd, Oriental – 1939 Packard 120 sedan

Oriental Rotary Club Overall Best in Show trophy
