Adragon, a ballerina, and a bumblebee walked in the 2018 PAWS Pet Parade, Saturday March 24. Best in Show went to local favorite, Bonnie. Awards were also given for Best Behaved, Best Town Spirit, and a new category – Best Performance.Best in Show – Bonnie with her human Carol Small.PAWS, the Pamlico Animal Welfare Society, sponsors and hosts the event each year. A bribable Judge makes the rounds before the event, taking donations to ensure a place in the winner’s circle. The donations, combined with hot dog sales and a registration fee, fund PAWS’ work in the county.
This curious pup was not shy about being in front of the camera.Several participants came from PAWS’ New Leash on Life program. Shelter dogs are rescued, given to inmates at Pamlico Correctional Facility to train as companions, then adopted out once the program is completed. Funds from the parade will go to this initiative as well as a spay/neuter project and pet food distribution.

Pete, wearing an Oriental Dragon t-shirt, won Best Town Spirit.Ling Ling’s popcorn costume was too tempting for her pirate companion; the smaller dog kept trying to eat it.It must be spring – the bumblebees are out…Dressed in her best, this stylish dog leads the pack.This large Newfoundland dog is happy to get head scratches from passersby.A K-9 helps keep the peace.At the end of the parade, it’s time for a nap.
