Best in Show – Bonnie with her human Carol Small.

PAWS, the Pamlico Animal Welfare Society, sponsors and hosts the event each year. A bribable Judge makes the rounds before the event, taking donations to ensure a place in the winner’s circle. The donations, combined with hot dog sales and a registration fee, fund PAWS’ work in the county.

This curious pup was not shy about being in front of the camera.

Several participants came from PAWS’ New Leash on Life program. Shelter dogs are rescued, given to inmates at Pamlico Correctional Facility to train as companions, then adopted out once the program is completed. Funds from the parade will go to this initiative as well as a spay/neuter project and pet food distribution.
