Obituary and life story submitted by the family.
Gregory (Greg) Perry was born in 1947 near Rochester, New York, and graduated in 1969 from Duke University, where he acquired his nickname Moose. Greg passed away Wednesday, August 14 at his home in Oriental, North Carolina.
For most of his career, he worked for Alcoa, Inc., before retiring in Marysville, Tennessee. He and his wife Sarah Goodnight moved to Oriental, NC so they could enjoy the quiet backwater fishing and kayaking, sensational bird watching in all seasons, and collecting shark teeth and fossils along the Carolina coasts and tributaries.
Greg had become a renowned nature photographer, fisherman, and cook. He enjoyed traveling to scenic natural areas like South Topsail Beach where his famous Black Drum surf catch photo is still on view at a local fish licensing store, but he regularly returned to his family owned Zitka Island in the St. Lawrence River. An old river camp that dates back to the late 1800’s and the walleye fishing is the best. Greg is survived by his wife Sarah, son Mathew Perry, granddaughter Kloey Long and stepdaughter Keri Smith.
Memorial donations should be made to Holt’s Chapel Community Center, Inc. P O Box 616, Oriental, NC 28571, respectfully in support of his wife’s former volunteer work to help preserve Pamlico County’s only restored Historic Rosenwald School which is now proudly designated a National Historic Place.
