Town Board met at 7p on April 4, 2017. All Commissioners and Mayor Sally Belangia were present.1. No public comments
2. Discussion re: HB310 and S377/small cell site permitting
Diane Miller explained the downside of small cell sites in Oriental, including: takes permitting away from municipalities, has to be an imminent threat for local government to step in; only benefits cellular communication companies.Diane to write a letter against it to legislators and would encourage residents to contact legislature as well.
3. Planning Board is meeting on 4/19/17 to discuss a new Mildred St. SUP. David White proposed the Town Board discuss it at the 5/2/17 meeting – approved. David also noted that letters will be sent to homes not in compliance with SUP laws.
4. Budget meetings to take place on 4/18/17 from 8-10am and 4/25/17 from 8-10am.
5. March Police/Sheriff’s Report
61 resident checks, 10 traffic warnings, 58 business security checks, and 1 response to an alarm. Sheriff’s department redeploying staff to cover Oriental.6. *Manager’s Report *
Potholes: Town continuing to collect pothole addresses (send them to admin@townoforiental.com)
FEMA: Damages are in process with FEMA—paperwork indicates we will receive $27,800. We recorded a total of $39,400.
CycleNC: Many attendees come back to Oriental later. Any businesses who want their info distributed can bring it to Town Hall (750-1,000 pieces recommended).
Town Wide Yard Sale scheduled the first weekend in May. Participants can pick up their #s at Marsha’s Cottage.
Annual Burnout will be April 21-May 5.
7. Committee/Board Reports
No big news. Repainting, washing, and lining for pickle ball will happen as soon as temps and humidity allow.Some Parks & Rec staff turnover. Duties are being reassigned.
Gravel on Hinman lot is acceptable as a parking lot. A landscaping plan approved by Planning/Tree Board, as well as a Change of Use form, must be filed prior to use as a parking lot.
8. Commissioners’ Comment Period
Barb brought up the topic of when to post the Town Board agenda. Wednesday prior to the Town Board meeting is the new cut-off for info to be submitted.Mayor Bellangia mentioned that a fraud seminar is happening at First Citizens Bank on 4/26/17 at 8am. RSVP requested.
David and Barb shared examples of phone scams that have happened to them or others in town; for example, a caller saying “Can you hear me?” so that they can get your recorded voice.
