Nevermore, showing good form in spite of light air
17th Annual Oriental Cup Regatta
September 17th 2005
It takes more than a catagory 1 hurricane to dampen the spirits of the Oriental Cup Regatta! Festivities kicked of Friday night without a hitch, and the race got off to an exciting start on Saturday, right on schedule. In fact the word on the street is that the first start, of the cruising class, had more than it's fair share of excitement! Towndock.net interviewed Captain Rose of the Privateer Graceful Adventure to get the full story.
After the race, skippers and crew of the more that 35 boats participating, as well as a number of townspeople, settled down at the Tiki Bar for a well deserved celebration. A fantastic crab and steak dinner was served up by the Toucan Grill, followed by an evening of dancing with The Fabulous Shades. Ed Johnson, bass player with The Fabulous Shades, summed up the evening nicely. "It's amazing that the people of Oriental can pull off an event like this after a major hurricane! It was, without a doubt, the best gig we've had all year."
Sunday morning, skippers and crew got together for brunch and the awards presentation on the Tiki Bar deck. But first they got a chance to meet last years scholorship recipient,
Daniel Hughes, who is now a freshman at NCSU. Proceeds from the Oriental Cup Regatta go to the Bill Harris Memorial Scholorship Fund,
which helps one deserving Pamlico County student go to college each year.
