Ripping Sails
Aside from the first, second and third place finishers in the 6 classes, there were other winners Saturday. Among them: the sail makers in Oriental. The gusty winds caused the sails on at least three boats to tear.

Doug Sligh and Mary Ann Parham say the 110 on their boat, Calculation tore. Perry Cheatham says his staysail got “messed up” though it was in his estimation, “marginally due to the weather”. And Jan Erickson’s newly acquired Olympic ketch was said to have had two sails blow out.

Some boats almost didn’t make it to the starting line. The crew of George Homme’s Swan, Spirit, had planned to sail out of their slip at Oriental Harbor Marina because their motor was not working. But because the south winds had been blowing water out toward the river, the Swan’s 6 1/2 foot draft keel was stuck on the bottom…until Bill Sternberg towed them out to the harbor.

One Year Anniversary of Isabel and Perspective
Jane Tindall also had a memorable start to the day. As she guided her boat, “Janesway” from her Smith Creek dock to the starting line, black smoke poured out of her engine. The engine was turned off. Jane and her crew sailed to the starting line, sailed the race, came in 6th out of a dozen in their class and made it back to the dock under sail, perhaps logging more hours on the water than any other crew.

The breeze catches the crew of "Janesway" - Trish Keegan, Dawn Keller, Skipper Jane Tindall, Debbie Bullock. They didn't win an award...had black smoke engine trouble...but had a happy day on the race course.

The 2004 Oriental Cup Regatta came a year to the day after Hurricane Isabel hit Pamlico County. Isabel’s floodwaters had totaled Jane Tindall’s home and belongings.

When we mentioned the anniversary, Jane put Saturday’s engine trouble in to perspective, “A little black smoke ain’t nothing.” And she laughed.
