Emily Daniels impressed the judges with a proper cast iron skillet

Also in the running in the Cornbread Contest were Emily Daniels’ Texas style cornbread – delivered in the skillet, Grace Evans cornbread latkes, Cheryl Huff’s entry in the shape of corncobs, Paula Winston’s airy cornbread, Lori Wagoner’s Three Tiered Cornbread, and Jennifer Smart’s “I May Be From Maryland But I Know To Leave The Sugar Out” Cheese Cornbread a la Florentine. The kitchens at Town Dock were also in experimental mode Saturday afternoon, leading to a Jiffy mix laced with Miss Ruth’s generic cola and Tennessee whisky (a corn product).

Word on the street later on was that Ask Salty had planned to enter, but was unable to get to her oven Saturday afternoon. She is said to be awaiting the next cook-off….

This may have been the last BBQ on Ronnie’s property, but not the last at the corner of South Water and Hodges.

Ronnie has sold the lot and trailer to a family who are moving in in July. Ronnie will remain in town, and so will his grill. The October party he says will be held just across South Water Street at Rob and Sue Werner’s.

The Werners’ yard has already been a big part of the BBQ parties. Many folks took their food across South Water to their yard, where there was a plentiful supply of Adirondack chairs. (The Werners specialize in customized Adirondack chairs) The dessert tent was there, and in October, Ronnie says, his grill and the potluck table will go there too.

Changing the October Date So More Cruisers Can Attend

Among those attending the BBQ on Saturday were folks from some boats at the Town Dock and marinas.

With cruisers in mind, Ronnie says he’s thinking of changing the date of the October feast. In past years it has been the week after the Annapolis Sail Boat Show, timed so that people could attend both events. But Ronnie, who lived on his boat for a number of years, says he wants to be sure that cruisers have a chance to make his party. He’s concerned that it could take longer than a week to get from Annapolis to Oriental and so he’s thinking of delaying the party till the last week end in October, which would give cruisers a couple of weeks to make the trek down the Chesapeake, through the Dismal Swamp and down to this end of Pamlico Sound. Ronnie says to keep a watch of TownDock.net for updates on when it will be.
