CroakerFest Themes
ISO: One snappy, smart theme for this year's Croaker Festival

Story updated February 21, 2003

Ever themed a festival before? Here's your big chance!

Organizers of this year's CroakerFest are looking for a theme for the annual festival in July and they're asking TownDock.net readers to come up with the brilliant ideas. (Apparently y'all have developed a reputation for wordplay in the Pamlico Captions contests....)

Here are some of the suggestions you've sent in so far:

Eat Fish, and you won`t croak

Jeff McCain Greensboro, NC

-----------

"HOOKED ON ORIENTAL"

or

"WHY I'M HOOKED ON ORIENTAL"

or

"YOU'LL GET HOOKED AT ORIENTAL"

George Duffie Oriental, NC

-----------

"Only the Best at CroakerFest!'

Jane Hartman
Belews Creek for now, Brown's Creek in the future.

This suggestion provided us with a Croaker education we hadn't anticipated:

Fact: Croakers descended from Mr. Limpet...

The Incredible Mr. Limpet, one of the finest family fish stories ever.
Henry Limpet, a bespectacled Brooklyn bookkeeper whose various physical shortcomings render him ineligible for the army, just as America's imminent entry into WWII is igniting patriotic fervor across the land. Henry's sense of self worth plummets. Soon after lamenting to his pet fish, "I wish I were a fish," Henry falls off a Coney Island pier and gets his wish. And what a fish: Henry retains his human intellect , and possesses a unique underwater roar (more a thrummm, actually) similar to that of the croaker, that enables him to help locate underwater enemies. Mr. Limpet becomes an unlikely hero.

So, there you have it:

"Mr. Limpet Comes to Oriental"
or
"Meet Mr Limpet!"
("Catch Mr Limpet"?)

Teeshirts, programs and advertising would be easily recognizable. Kids would love it. Perhaps Disney would like to get involved!
Respectively submitted,
James Calore
Worton Creek, MD/Pierce Creek, NC

"My Croaker is Oriental"
or
"My Croaker is Oriental NC"

Brad and Carol Vick, Ray Creekside Marina / Winston-Salem

------------

In light of the worlds unstable condition and a play on Homeland Security...Homeland Serenity.
My husband Clark and I are moving to Arapahoe after finding Oriental and falling in love with the village and the life style. That hometown and lifestyle feel inspired the theme of "Homeland Serenity". It seems so befitting of the pride and appreciation we all have for Oriental and yet reinforces our pride in our country and the joy that freedom brings to our lives.

"SMORGASBORD OF THE NEUSE"
would be fitting and descriptive of the town and festival. Artists, fisherman, poets, sailors. new residents and old residents of yesteryear living as a heterogeneous mixture in harmony. That to me is a smorgasbord of people living on the Neuse.

Check TownDock everyday and enjoy the info. How about a Croaker Festival theme that is based on this...THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON HERE!!! Maybe the T-shirt could have a croaker dressed up like Sam Spade a la Bogart.

Greenville, SC & Oriental, NC

To steal a line from "Oliver", how about: FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD.... It's pretty well accepted that a move to Oriental means a 10 pound (at least) weight gain. No gathering is complete without cookies or cake. The mere suggestion of a gathering or meeting is immediately followed by a discussion of who will bring what food. Some people have been known to avoid socializing just to keep their weight under control!.

If "food" were the theme, the fishing and crabbing industries could shine. And maybe some of us who are not watermen might learn a little more about what's available.

Marj Winter

-------------

M y pitch for the 'fest: Celebrating Land and Sea: Oriental's Farmin' and Fishin'

(And if there are craft booths, I may be marketing my manure compost as: 'Pamlico Poop: Brown Gold from Oriental' Guarantee: earthworms in every bag!)

Cheryl Huff

Before I get to my suggestions, I would like to tell you how much I enjoy the website!

Thanks again.

An anonymous suggestion:

Don’t croak on me.

Or

Got croakers?

The “Got croakers?” as a take off on the “got milk” ads could make for some very interesting t-shirt and float designs.

As you can see, a number of you have responded since we put out the word in early February. But we'd like to give the organizers a bunch more to choose from. That's why we're renewing our call. If you haven't taken a crack at it yet, we hope you'll try right now and send in your suggested theme for the CroakerFest.

Take a minute..close your eyes to the cold of winter and put yourself in the hot days of July and give us a theme. Just act quickly, because the organizers need to pick the theme soon! Send your idea(s) to info@towndock.net
