Fish Store Near The Harbor
Retail Flounder, Shrimp & Crab
May 24, 2007

It’s been a curiosity for visitors for some time. That a fishing town such as Oriental did not have a fish store near the harbor.

That’s about to change with the opening on Thursday of the Garland Fulcher Seafood Market.

Garland Fulcher Seafood Market will be in this building on Hodges Street (sporting its new coat of white paint).

Jeff Styron is setting up the fish store right across Hodges Street from his main business, Garland Fulcher Seafood (operated by Jeff's father, Mayor Sherrill Styron). He says the new market on Hodges Street near South Water will be open seven days a week selling fish off the boats – flounder, shrimp, crab – as well as oysters, scallops, tuna and salmon.

Jeff is expecting a busy first weekend, thanks to the Memorial Day holiday and the influx of visitors to town.

The Garland Fulcher Seafood Market makes its home in a small plywood building known as the “Dragon’s Lair” because it's where the dragon emerges for the run down Hodges Street on New Years Eve. In recent years it was also home to the Dragon Spokes bicycle rental.

Painting the spots away

On a recent weekend morning, Jeff Styron and a crew were whitewashing – and taking away it’s red polkadots --- as they readied the building for the fish market. While the white paint has done away with the dragon mural, more animals are on the way. Word is that fish will be painted on the side of the building.

For those visitors who want seafood but don’t want to cook it, steaming will be available right next door, thanks to Tennessee Ronnie, who will also have some tables and chairs set up on the Joe Cox lot where folks can sit and eat. If you visit, it may be Ronnie you find running the store.

Simple pricing - sales tax included.

Tennessee Ronnie inside the building. Ronnie will steam your fish for you if you want. His philosophical musings will also be available for no additional charge.
